Nexperia introduces two new ideal diodes for consumer, industrial and automotive applications
Nexperia has announced the addition of two new ideal diode ICs to its ever-expanding portfolio of power devices. The NID5100-Q100 has been qualified for use in automotive applications, while the NID5100 is suitable for conventional industrial and consumer applications.
Ideal diodes are devices based on Metal-Organic Semiconductors (MOSFETs) that exhibit much reduced forward voltage drop compared to conventional diodes. Consequently, they serve as an optimal substitute for regular diodes in systems where power efficiency is of utmost importance.
The ideal diodes NID5100 and NID5100-Q100 are offered in compact TSSP6/SOT363-2 leaded plastic packages with dimensions of 2.1 mm x 1.25 mm x 0.95 mm. The diverse range of applications that can derive advantages from the exceptional electrical performance exhibited by the NID5100 ideal diodes encompass smart meters, fire/security sensors, battery-powered wearables, and automobile telematics systems.
The NID5100 is an ideal diode based on PMOS technology, in which the gate voltage of an inside MOSFET limits the voltage difference between the anode and cathode to be eight to ten times lower than the forward voltage drop observed in Schottky diodes with similar ratings. In addition to its low forward drop, the MOSFET-based ideal diode exhibits the capability to significantly decrease reverse DC leakage current, with a reduction of up to 100 times when compared to a conventional Schottky diode.
In contrast to other competitive ideal diodes, the NID5100 exhibits the capability to connect several power supplies in a “OR” configuration, while simultaneously maintaining reverse polarity protection. Additionally, it has an exceptionally rapid response time, facilitating seamless power transfer. The perfect diode developed by Nexperia presents several additional benefits, including a forward regulation voltage of 31 mV (typical), the capability to manage forward current values of up to 1.5 A, and an automated transition between OR-ed power supplies.
It functions within a voltage range spanning from 1.2V to 5.5V and has remarkably low current consumption, as evidenced by a shutdown current of 170 nA for a 3.3 V VIN and a quiescent current of 240 nA. Furthermore, the diode incorporates reverse voltage protection, boasting an absolute maximum rating of -6 V, along with an output status indication (ST). These features render it a resilient and effective option for power management applications.
